PARK TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Jun. 23, 2026) – Several years ago, life rings were installed on the north pier of Holland State Park. On Monday afternoon, they saves the lives of two teenaged girls who had been floundering in the waters of Lake Michigan there.
According to the Park Township Fire Department, staff at the park were in the process of taking down yellow caution flags and hoisting red flags around 2 PM, due to strengthening northwest winds causing large waves and hazardous conditions on the waters there. This was when one of the girls started screaming for help.
A bystander who saw the scene used a life ring and helped shepherd the two youths from the Otsego area to safety. It was learned that they had been swimming in a designated buoy area when waves and currents began pushing them towards the pier. The girls were checked out at the scene by emergency personnel and released.
No names were disclosed as the incident remains under investigation.
