WHITEHALL, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Jun. 16, 2026) – Jim Dreyer is going back into the water.
The ultra-marathon swimmer from Spring Lake announced on Monday a planned 22-mile effort from offshore in Lake Michigan to Whitehall in August. While he may be approaching 64 years of age when he makes this attempt, the swim is to honor this nation’s 250th anniversary through towing 250 cannonballs – one on his back to honor his father, the others in a dingy.
Whitehall’s Goodrich Park was selected as the destination, and the cannonballs will be used to raise funds as part of a US 250th Combat Veterans Memorial to be built near there. He also chose the 22-mile length to spotlight the estimated number of veterans who take their own lives daily due to post-traumatic stress.
Dreyer says that, by swimming for charity, it gives him added incentive to complete his numerous cross-country excursions over the past 40 years.
Dreyer is targeting an August 7th arrival date, depending on weather conditions. More on his effort is here.
