HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, May 27, 2026) – Another step in the Waterfront Holland project has been taken.
On Tuesday, city officials announced that the municipality has been awarded an $11.25 million Port Infrastructure Development Program Grant from the US Department of Transportation’s Marine Administration. The money will go towards the Holland Intermodal Ports Improvement Project at 64 Pine Avenue, on the site of the former James DeYoung Power Plant.
Three years ago, Holland voters approved a proposed land swap with Verplank Dock Company in which the current dock off of West 8th Street would be ceded to the city in exchange for the DeYoung plant site. However, before that transaction can take place, the seawall at that site needs to be reconstructed, work must be done to accommodate industrial operations, and public infrastructure renovations are required. That work is planned for 2027 and 2028, which City Manager Keith Van Beek says is along projected time lines.
According to city officials, staffers will go over various requirements of the federal grant before submitting a proposed formal agreement for council members’ consideration. No exact timetable for when such a submission was immediately disclosed.
