HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, May 20, 2026) – The next major municipal capital improvement project for the City of Holland could get started soon.
During Wednesday evening’s biweekly business meeting, the Holland City Council is expected to approve a Notice of Intent resolution to issue up to $22 million in bonds for a proposed 83,000 square-foot Recreation Center, slated to be built adjacent to Smallenberg Park off of Fairbanks Avenue. The money would augment a $5 million donation through the Heeringa Estate, which had provided a $2 million financial boost towards the renovation of the Holland Civic Center eight years ago.
The governing panel had already retained Lakewood Construction and Integrated Architecture to help design the proposed center, and officials are hoping to break ground on the project this fall. When completed, it would allow the recreation department to consolidate its activities in one space, something that City Manager Keith Van Beek believes will benefit the entire community.
