SAUGATUCK TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Apr. 20, 2026) – Driving the wrong way on I-196 near Saugatuck cost a driver’s life late on Sunday evening.
No name, gender, or hometown was initially disclosed by Allegan County Sheriff’s Sergeant Ryan Rewa following the crash around 11:40 PM on the freeway near the 39 mile marker. First responders had been alerted to the situation of a northbound vehicle in the southbound lanes, but before they could intercept that vehicle, it was struck by two semi tractor-trailers. They were able to remove the lone motorist when they arrived on the scene, but efforts to save a life were unsuccessful, while the two truckers were not hurt.
Southbound traffic was diverted off of the expressway at the 41 mile marker (Blue Star Highway) for several hours while the matter was being handled by various agencies, while northbound traffic had been already slowed due to ongoing road reconstruction in that area. The incident remains under investigation.
