GRAND RAPIDS, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Apr. 8, 2026) – It may have been more than a month since National Slam the Scam Day was observed, but the effort to illegally separate victims from their identities and their money continue.
On Monday, the US Social Security Administration, along with the Office of the Inspector General, sent out a social media post about never sharing Social Security numbers with unexpected callers, saying that scammers often pretend to be government officials to steal your identity and more. This comes as the Federal Trade Commission recorded over 330,000 impersonation scams last year, a 25 percent spike, and SSA officials, such as Hillary Hatch with the Grand Rapids office, are warning of a sharp uptick in 2026 of government imposter scam emails. purporting to provide access to a victim’s Social Security statement.
Social Security recipients are asked to go online to check on their account, and to report any suspicious correspondence received through a link on that website.
