ZEELAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Mar. 27, 2026) – Some hard decisions have had to be made at Zeeland Public Schools, and not surprisingly, there has been some blowback as a result.
Last month, the district announced that its ZQuest project-based elementary and middle school program with a balanced calendar, will be dropped at the end of the current academic year. Declining enrollment and budget constraints were given as the main reasons for the move, explained first-year Superintendent Rod Hetherton.
In its place will be a learning initiative combining the best elements of ZQuest, along with the gifted and talented program, while extending a farm school from Pre-K through second grade, and focusing on project-based curricula and outdoor education. This would be through a traditional school calendar.
These and other proposed changes led to a lengthy public comment period during the Zeeland Board’s March meeting, but there has been no indication at this point of any change of direction as a result.
