LANSING, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Jan. 30, 2026) – Joblessness remained stable along the Lakeshore as it rose in many areas of the state last month.
In numbers released on Thursday by the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget, not seasonally-adjusted unemployment rates rose in 11 of the state’s 18 labor market areas, and in 66 of 83 of its counties. That included Allegan County, which went up three tenths of a percentage point to 4.4 percent, but not Ottawa County, which stayed constant at 3.9 percent. Those levels were also identical to December of 2024.
The Grand Rapids regional market, which includes Ottawa County but not Allegan County, remained the same as well month-to-month at four percent even, but was lower by three tenths of a percentage point from a year earlier.
State officials say that most regional labor markets “exhibited prominent employment decreases, both over the month and over the year.”
