ALLEGAN, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Jan. 19, 2026) – Not even the US Internal Revenue Service is above being connected with a scam these days.
According to Allegan County’s Register of Deeds Bob Genetski, his office has been getting calls recently from property owners receiving letters, purportedly from the IRS, claiming that a federal tax lien has been placed in their name, and that they need to call an 866 number for information on how to prevent actions taken against them as a result.
The Saugatuck Republican tried calling that toll-free number, but he said that it had been disconnected, and admitted efforts to verify this was difficult.
Genetski asks Allegan County property owners who may have received such a notice to call his office (269-673-0390) or go online to see if any liens have been placed on their land.
