LAKETOWN TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Jan. 15, 2026) – The Interurban will still be running in Laketown Township, but not with any municipal support.
During Wednesday night’s Board of Trustees monthly meeting, separate measures that would have put a .15 mill levy question for public transportation on the August 4th ballot, or for the township pay $5 per ride for seniors and those with disabilities, failed. The first was voted down by the governing panel, the second didn’t get a second when proposed.
Last month, the board voted to exercise a 30-day notice to halt the bus service, effective last Saturday, January 10th, which had been partially subsidized by the township on a trial basis in 2025. The township couldn’t come up with a new deal with the Interurban on reducing the per-rider fee, and staff looked into the Allegan County-sponsored Allegan County Transportation service as a replacement. An anonymous donation was received to maintain the Interurban service in the township through January 31st.
Following the board’s action, Interurban Transit Authority Executive Director Becky Carten-Crandall stepped up.
The township has also looked into aligning itself with Allegan County Transportation, which is operated by the county, as a replacement for on-demand public bus service.
