LAKETOWN TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Jan. 14, 2026) – Could the Interurban still be running in Laketown Township?
The matter is slated to be before that municipality’s Board of Trustees during its monthly meeting on Wednesday evening. Last month, the panel voted to exercise a 30-day notice to halt the bus service, effective last Saturday, January 10th, which had been partially subsidized by the township on a trial basis in 2025. The township couldn’t come up with a new deal with the Interurban on reducing the per-rider fee, and staff looked into the Allegan County-sponsored Allegan County Transportation service as a replacement. An anonymous donation was received to maintain the Interurban service in the township through January 31st.
Saugatuck City Councilman Gregory Muncey, who is also an Interurban board member, spoke before the township board during last Wednesday’s study session.
County Treasurer Jim Johnson believes that a small levy of around one tenth of a mill for Interurban service may be the answer.
The Laketown Township Board meets at 6 PM at the Township Hall (4338 Beeline Rd.). An online link to the meeting agenda and supporting documents is here.
