LANSING, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Jan. 13, 2026) – A fresh piece of evidence for those wishing to ban smart phone use in Michigan’s K-12 classrooms has emerged.
A new report from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study, involving 640 teens aged 13 to 18, showed teens spend over an hour a day on their phones while at school, with social media taking up most of their device time. The study also found that older teens ages 16 to 18, along with those from lower-income households, had the highest smart phone use.
Last year, the state House turned down legislation, co-sponsored by Holland Republican Nancy DeBoer, that would have required the board of a school district, or board of directors of a public school academy, to implement a wireless communications device policy. The former Holland Mayor would like to see it revived in the upcoming year.
The ABCD Study has 21 research sites nationwide, including one at the University of Michigan’s main campus in Ann Arbor.
