KALAMAZOO, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Dec. 23, 2025) – The political landscape in Michigan’s fourth US House district is getting a little clearer.
Over the weekend, Kalamazoo attorney Jessica Swartz announced that she is abandoning a second attempt to win the Democratic Party nomination in next August’s primary election. She had been the standard-bearer last November in falling to seven-time Republican incumbent Bill Huizenga of Holland by 12 percentage points.
In disclosing her future political plans, Swartz said that she will now focus on the 41st state House district seat currently held by fellow Democrat Julie Rogers, who has stated her intentions to run for the 19th state Senate seat in August. That spot is currently held by Sean McCann, who is already a declared Democratic Party hopeful for the fourth US House district, and has earned the endorsement of Governor Whitmer.
Swartz’ decision leaves McCann, Richard Aaron and Diop Harris in the Democratic field to challenge Huizenga, who announced last week his intention to seek a ninth two-year term in Congress. There are no other Republicans thus far in this race.
