SOUTH HAVEN, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Dec. 23, 2025) – More information has been disclosed concerning a fire near the South Haven Area Water Sewer Authority plant during the overnight hours of Saturday.
Members of South Haven Area Emergency Services were dispatched shortly after 2 AM to the utility’s building off of 8th Avenue, across from the South Pier, on a report of a possible structure fire. Seven portable restrooms adjacent to the building were fully engulfed when crews arrived, and crews were able to quickly bring the flames under control.
The heat generated by the blaze did cause some damage to exterior walls, windows, and a digital sign, but the quick work by firefighters in cooling the area kept the flames from spreading into the facility, and plant operations were not disrupted as a result.
Evidence at the scene had initially led investigators to initially believe that the fire was deliberately set. No injuries were reported, and no dollar estimate of damage inflicted was disclosed.
In a follow up statement on Tuesday, the South Haven Police Department disclosed that a person of interest in the matter has been interviewed, but not detained. “It does not appear that the fire was purposely or maliciously set.” the statement read. “SHPD is waiting for repair estimates, and then will be sending the case to the prosecutor’s office for charges on the suspect.”
Anyone with any information on the matter is asked to contact the South Haven Police Department (269-637-5151).
