SAUGATUCK, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Dec. 11, 2025) – As one Lakeshore community is enjoying a new rec center, another is planning one.
On Wednesday, Saugatuck Public Schools announced the acquisition of 50 acres of property adjacent to the Community Church of Douglas, off of Wiley Road east of the Blue Star Highway. No purchase price was disclosed.
While the initial idea is to build a state-of-the-art community recreation center there, along with having other amenities such as additional practice and competitive athletic fields, pickleball courts, adult learning and art making space, walking paths, and a future home for the bus fleet, the district plans to have public input before moving forward, according to Superintendent Mark Neidlinger.
Saugatuck Public Schools officials are well aware that it took three tries before a $35.6 million bond ballot proposal for modernizing facilities passed in March of 2020, with work on that concluding earlier this year.
In July, Holland Township opened its $15 million, 75,000 square-foot Community Center, converting the former Younkers store on The Shops at Westshore complex off of US-31 and James Street.
