HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Nov. 7, 2025) – As a new landmark in Holland nears its grand opening next Friday, remnants of a historic landmark in the Tulip City may be gone by then.
Crews should wrap up, by next week, the tearing down of the vintage greenhouse at the triangle which separates State Street, Central Avenue, and East 20th Street.

It took over $124,000 and three months to complete the razing of the site, according to City Manager Keith Van Beek.
That restoring of the 114-year-old structure is set for after the Tulip Time Festival next May.
The Tropical House, which was designed to grow plants and house fish, became obsolete when the city built its current greenhouse. Discussion on clearing the site date back to 2015, when the Holland City Council approved a deal with Heart of Holland, which provided snowmelt expansion to Evergreen Commons, along with a transfer of the land to the Commons. The project had been held up due to the Tropical House being designated as a landmark property in a single-site local historic district in 1999.
What the Commons will do with the land is still not finalized, according to its President and CEO, the Reverend Dr. Jill VerSteeg.
Next Friday is the scheduled grand opening of the Holland Community Ice Skating Park off of East 6th Street and College Avenue, in the Window on the Waterfront Park complex.
