UNDATED (WHTC-AM/FM, Nov. 6, 2025) – Two Lakeshore communities have seen action on the matter of short term rentals this week.
On Tuesday, 20th Circuit Court Judge Jon Hulsing ruled that the Park Township Zoning Board of Appeals was within its rights to prohibit such use of property in residential districts. The municipality’s Board of Trustees had initially made such a decision, but a group of property owners calling itself Park Township Neighbors filed suit, claiming the trustees’ action was done without a proper public hearing or prior notice, but Hulsing threw that case out last November, putting the matter back into the zoning board’s hands. That panel then reaffirmed its decision to prohibit STR’s created after 1974, and Hulsing’s most recent decision stemmed from a PTN appeal. The group told the Holland Sentinel in today’s editions that they will continue its legal fight.
Meanwhile, a joint committee of Laketown Township board members and the planning commission of that municipality held its last meeting on Wednesday night to go over what that community should do with short term rentals. Township Supervisor Steven Ringelberg admitted that “we were late to the game” on this.
He’s not in favor of STR.
Laketown Township has had a moratorium on free-standing short term rentals since May 19th while its leaders decide on what course of action should be taken on the matter.
