HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Nov. 6, 2025) – Several issues were before the Holland City Council on Wednesday night, a day after voters decided to change the makeup of the governing panel.
At-Large Councilman Quincy Byrd and Third Ward Council Member Belinda Sol were defeated in reelection bids, with Abby Klomparens and Tim Marroquin set to replace them later this month, so neither Byrd nor Sol attended this meeting.
Before Holland voters head to the polls again, four precincts will be merged into two. Due to an expected surge in early voting next year, council unanimously approved combining two adjacent precincts in both the second and fourth wards. Polling places would not be affected, and ward boundaries would remain unchanged, explained Clerk Brenda Katerberg.
Council was asked to expand the downtown Social District to include the Community Ice Park site off of East 6th Street and College Avenue in time for its Grand Opening next Friday evening, but Fifth Ward Councilman Scott Corbin and his colleagues wanted to go through the procedural first and second readings for an ordinance amendment.
There were a couple of traffic issues before the governing panel. Council considered installing a four-way stop at the junction of West 16th Street and Ottawa Avenue to accommodate shift changes at the nearby Kraft/Heinz pickle plant, along with removing a “non-compliant” crosswalk on West 40th Street between Ottawa Avenue and Graafschap Road. While the four-way stop proposal was unanimously approved, the crosswalk plan was “postponed” at the behest of City Manager Keith Van Beek.
Klomparens and Marroquin should be in their seats when the Holland City Council holds its next business meeting on November 19th.
