HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Oct. 1, 2025) – An incident last week south of Jenison spotlights an issue that gets some annual national attention right now.
On Monday, 49-year-old Michelle Matos-Colon was arraigned on open murder and felony firearm charges in the shooting death of her husband, 52-year-old Elieser Lores Montano, at a apartment unit off of Kenowa Avenue and 44th Street. Authorities were called there on a report of a “domestic situation”
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, with the Domestic Violence Awareness Project using its “With Survivors, Always” theme to strengthen partnerships toward safety, support and solidarity. That’s in line with the mission goal of the Holland-based Resilience: Advocates for Ending Violence non-profit. Suzanne Katenberg is its Crisis and Supportive Services Coordinator.
Thursday is Wear Purple Day to show support for efforts to stop domestic violence, and in Allegan County, the office or company that has the largest percentage of its workforce adorning violet-colored clothing will win homemade treats from various county staffers, including 48th Circuit Court Judge Marge Bakker. There is a form to enter to complete and turn in by 5 PM on Friday, and it can be obtained from Court Administrator Jennifer Brink (jbrink@allegancounty.org).
