HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Oct. 2, 2025) – A traffic matter snarled up the Holland City Council on Wednesday night.
During the biweekly business meeting, a request by the city’s streets department to remove a non-compliant crosswalk on West 40th Street, between Ottawa Avenue and Graafschap Road, on the grounds of safety, usage, and costs to bring it into compliance, was rejected. The governing panel was minus one member, with First Ward Councilman Tim Vreeman absent, so a split 4-4 vote meant that the measure failed. There was a number of email, phone and snail mail comments received by the clerk’s office opposing the removal, and council’s rejection meant that the matter will go back to the department for further review. Two other traffic changes – an all-way stop for West 16th Street at Ottawa Avenue, and a parking restriction in the alleyway next to the West 9th Street parking deck downtown – were approved.
In addition, a clerical error involving annual assessments for downtown property owners had to be brought up again. Separate proposals involving a charge for being a member of the Principal Shopping District remaining constant for Fiscal 2026, while fees for snowmelt and parking would increase by three percent, had been approved two weeks ago, and the revisiting of these matters on Wednesday evening resulted in a similar approval.
Finally, a city’s parks department request to change the name of Lakeview School Park to Lugers Park, in connection with a request by a member of the Holland Youth Advisory Committee to honor her family’s heritage in the area that included a schoolhouse and a road named for the Lugers family, was approved.
