GRAND HAVEN TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Sept. 15, 2025) – A 28-year-old Grand Rapids man lost his life on Sunday evening after an apparent marine crash on the Grand River east of Grand Haven.
No names were immediately disclosed by Ottawa County Sheriff’s Captain James Douglas after first responders were dispatched to the area of Ammeraal Avenue off of Mercury Drive, east of 152nd Avenue, around 8:50 PM. It was learned that the victim had been operating a jet ski, with an 18-year-old woman as a passenger, when it struck a navigational buoy, causing both persons to be thrown into the water.
The woman was able to get back onto the jet ski and was rescued by a passing civilian boat, but the man didn’t resurface. His body was recovered several hours later from 10 feet of water by members the Sheriff’s Office Dive Team, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman was treated for bumps and bruises at the scene.
The incident remains under investigation.
