WASHINGTON (WHTC-AM/FM, Aug. 22, 2025) – A three-month reprieve from Washington for the coal-fired electrical power plant in Port Sheldon Township has been extended.
The US Department of Energy on Wednesday issued an order to the Midcontinent Independent System Operator that the JH Campbell Plant is to continue operations through November 19th. An initial 90-day order from last May, which kept the Consumers Energy facility from closing on May 31st, was set to expire just after midnight on Thursday.
The Campbell plant was designated for mothballing by the Jackson-based utility as part of an effort to veer away from fossil fuel-based generation. Consumers officials claim that over $30 million has been spent thus far to keep the facility open, and they will be asking state regulators for immediate rate hikes to recoup those costs.
State Senator Roger Victory of Hudsonville, in whose district the Campbell plant resides, has been a vocal critic of efforts to close the complex.
State Attorney General Dana Nessel has been unsuccessfully attempting to have the DOE orders overturned in the courts.
