LANSING, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Aug. 8, 2025) – State Attorney General Dana Nessel has sent warnings to 37 telecom companies as she demands they stop illegal robocalls being routed through their networks.
Operation Robocall Roundup is meant to ensure voice service providers do their part to stop illegal robocalls. Nessel and 50 other attorneys general sent the letters this week, and says the providers have not followed Federal Communications Commission requirements.
Along these lines, a five-bill package aimed at putting a stop to robocall scams was introduced earlier this summer in the state Senate. Bills 351 to 355 would create explicit rules for telephone solicitors, prohibit them from blocking caller ID or displaying misleading information on such ID, allow the attorney general’s office to investigate and pursue civil actions for alleged violations, and impose penalties and fines of up to $75,000 for solicitors who target vulnerable victims.
Senate Minority Whip Roger Victory, a second-term Hudsonville Republican, admits that addressing the problem of robocalls is more of a federal matter than a state issue.
These bills have been referred to the state Senate Committee on Finance, Insurance and Consumer Protection.
