COVERT, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Jul. 25, 2025) – A hurdle to bringing the Palisades nuclear power plant back into operation was cleared on Thursday.
The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission approved a series of licensing and regulatory actions that would allow Holtec International to load fuel at the Covert facility under the auspices of Palisades Energy. It includes reinstating various documents and programs that were in place prior to operations ending in May of 2022. The decision was based in part from a report by NRC staffers this past May, which concluded that there were no significant environmental impacts from restarting the plant.
In this more recent announcement, NRC officials stated that there are still several licensing actions under commission review, along with additional requirements needing to be met, before Holtec can restart the plant under the original operating license, which ends in March of 2031. Such a restart of the 800 megawatt-plus facility is still targeted for the end of this year.
A public briefing on emergency preparedness plans related to the restart is slated for August 5 at 6 PM, in the Van Buren Intermediate School District Conference Center (490 S. Paw Paw St., Lawrence).
