ZEELAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Jul. 22, 2025) – A final hurdle for keeping the manufacture of baby formula in Zeeland for a second century may have been cleared on Monday night.
The City Council, on a 6-1 vote, approved the recommendation of the Planning Commission for rezoning two properties along East Main Avenue from residential to general industrial. The sites had been purchased by Reckett Zeeland in order to accommodate a proposed $836 million “modernization” of the facility off of Main and Fairview avenues that makes the Enfamil baby formula.
The matter had generated some concern from nearby residents who feared of increased traffic, noise and odor, along with perceived decreased values of their property. Others said that Reckett Zeeland, the city’s third largest employer behind Gentex and MillerKnoll, could pull up stakes, taking about 500 jobs with it, should this rezoning request be denied.
No timetable for when this project would begin has been announced by the subsidiary of Mead Johnson.
