LANSING, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Jun. 10, 2025) – Legislation that would mandate public schools in Michigan to deal with the issue of smart phone use in the classroom could take a step forward this week.
The House is expected to vote on Bill 4141, which would require school or academy boards to implement a wireless communications device policy, effective this fall.
Representative Mark Tisdel of suburban Detroit is the primary sponsor of the proposal, with fellow Republican Nancy DeBoer, the second-term lawmaker from Holland, as a co-sponsor.
Elementary and middle school students would be prohibited from using such a device on school grounds at any time, and for high school students during instructional time.
Similar legislation moving forward by Senate Democrats is not as strict as the House version, which critics claim would not meet the needs of all districts.
