MACKINAC ISLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, May 29, 2025) – The task of representing the US in Canada may be daunting to some, but for Pete Hoekstra, he’s taking on the assignment “optimistically.”
The one-time Congressman from Holland, who was the US Ambassador to the Netherlands during the first Trump Administration, spoke at the Detroit Regional Chamber’s Mackinac Policy Conference on Wednesday. While admitting some issues in relations between Washington and Ottawa, calling them “pebbles in the shoe” obstacles, Hoekstra is confident that a trade deal, among other things, will be worked out.
It was Hoekstra’s first major public remarks since his nomination for the ambassadorship was approved by the US Senate in April, and his credentials were accepted by the Canadian government earlier this month.
