ALLEGAN, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, May 20, 2025) – It may be more than four days since last Thursday’s storms swept across the Lakeshore, but the reverberations continue.
As of Tuesday morning, the website Find Energy reported that a total of 79 customers in Ottawa and Allegan counties were still without power, after strong winds, along with a couple of EF-1 tornadoes, came through between 9 PM and 11 PM. This is in contrast to over 14,500 in Ottawa County and 13,600 in Allegan County about six hours after the storms hit.
On Friday, the Allegan County Board of Commissioners officially declared the county in a local state of emergency, due to damage caused in the city of Allegan, as well as the communities of Dorr, Douglas, Hopkins, Martin, Saugatuck and Wayland. This is an initial step towards getting disaster relief funds from Lansing, and possibly Washington, as well as expediting emergency response activities.
Preliminary damage estimates must be made to the state on or by Tuesday in order for Allegan County to be considered for emergency funding from Lansing. An online link for residents who sustained damage to their property as a result of the storms is here.
In addition, the Allegan County Community Foundation has activated its “Allegan County Cares” disaster response fund to support both immediate and long-term recovery needs. Information on financially supporting this initiative is here.
As of Tuesday, there have been no reports of any injuries or deaths caused by this line of storms.
