BLENDON TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, May 12, 2025) – Ottawa County Emergency Management has more on a Sunday afternoon fire in Borculo that brought out crews from at least 21 agencies throughout the Lakeshore.
According to Director Lou Hunt, large volumes of wood mulch stored on the property of Michigan Wood Fibers, off of 96th Avenue north of Port Sheldon Street, caught fire around 2:20 PM. A lack of sufficient water to fight the flames in the area, along with thick smoke that settled in as nightfall arrived, hampered efforts to bring the blaze under control. It took until 1:45 AM on Monday before the last firefighters left the scene. There were no injuries reported.
Hunt added that, while the cause of the fire is still unknown, he believes that mulch fires of this nature can be caused by “external ignition sources, or even spontaneous combustion.” A dollar estimate of damage caused by the blaze is also to be determined.
