HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Mar. 12, 2025) – It may be a “spring break” for collegians, but for scamsters and fraudsters, it’s anything but a break.
Grand Valley State students were off all last week, while a 10-day hiatus from classes begins at Hope College on Friday. While most have or will enjoy the interlude from school work, there will be some who run afoul of the law, many times far away from home.
That’s when parents and grandparents get targeted calls, according to Detective Sergeant Jason Valenzuela of the Holland Department of Public Safety’s Police Division.
Valenzuela, who focuses his efforts in combating scams and frauds, explains what happens next.
Last month, the sheriff of Volusia County in Central Florida issued a warning that parents of youngsters arrested in his jurisdiction will be asked to pick up their child, no matter where they may be living. Valenzuela says that just helps the scamsters and fraudsters.
Those who believe that they have received such a call are asked to contact the Ottawa County Dispatch non-emergency line at 800-249-0911, or a similar line with Allegan County Dispatch at 269-673-3899.
