Richard, known as Dick to his friends and family, was the son of Marian and Russell Swaney. He grew up in Birmingham and was a standout, three-sport athlete at Seaholm High School. He attended the University of Michigan as an undergraduate, where he majored in business and was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity.
He continued his education at the University of Michigan, earning his J.D. from the Law School in 1972. In 1974, he opened his own law practice in downtown Holland, where he worked as an attorney for 50 years. Dick loved his work and serving the community; he loved Michigan football (Go Blue!); he loved the beach and his house on Lake Michigan; most of all, he loved his family.
He brought joy to those around him with his warmth and quick sense of humor. His smile and laugh were infectious. He was a supportive listener, a thoughtful problem solver, and a willing helper. He believed in hard work, in honesty, and in doing the right thing. In short, he was a good man. He was beloved by his friends and family and will be deeply missed.
Funeral services will be 11 am Monday (March 10) at the Dykstra Funeral Home-Mulder Chapel, 188 West 32nd Street, with Bill Swaney officiating. Burial will be in Lakewood Cemetery. Visiting will be 2-4 pm Sunday (March 9) at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Parkinson’s Association of West Michigan.
