HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Feb. 25, 2025) – A 26-year-old Venezuelan living in the Chicagoland area is in the Ottawa County Jail after an attempted burglary of a ATM on Holland’s North Side over the past weekend ended with a police chase, crash, and subsequent arrest.
After a Tuesday arraignment via video hookup with the 58th District Court in Holland, Angel Eduardo Mavarez-Romero was ordered held for a total of $60,000 bond on a count of safe breaking, as well as one for fleeing and eluding. He was taken into custody during the overnight hours on Sunday in the area of US-31 and Barry Street after allegedly breaking into a money machine at the Lake Trust Credit Union branch off of West Shore Drive.
He was spotted driving off in a sedan near Greenly Street at US-31, and after a brief chase, the vehicle crashed into the median. Mavarez-Romero then fled on foot, but was captured by a Sheriff’s Department canine hiding in some industrial equipment nearby. No injuries were reported during his attempted flight from deputies and Holland Public Safety Police Services officers.
No preliminary hearing date was disclosed by the Sheriff’s Office as the incident remains under investigation.
