BYRON TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Feb. 1, 2025) – A 43-year-old Holland woman lost her life in a single vehicle crash near Byron Center on Friday night.
According to the Kent County Sheriff’s Office, an unnamed 39-year-old Holland woman was driving the vehicle westbound on 100th Street around 10:30 PM, and had just passed Homrich Avenue when the car started skidding while going downhill on an icy roadway. The vehicle veered off of the roadway, struck a tree, and burst into flames.
The driver was able to escape, apparently unhurt, but her passenger, Stephanie Deridder, was trapped inside. Firefighters were able to douse the flames and extricate her from the vehicle, but despite life-saving measures at the scene, Deridder was pronounced dead by the Kent County Medical Examiner’s Office.
It didn’t appear to deputies that alcohol was a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.
