ZEELAND TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Jan. 21, 2025) – For the second time in as many days, inclement weather led to a major pileup along the stretch of I-196 between Zeeland and Hudsonville.
According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Captain James Douglas, numerous crashes were reported in both directions of the Interstate around 10:45 AM on Tuesday. The most notable of these mishaps occurred on the westbound lanes, when a jack-knife semi and a pickup truck collided, with the smaller vehicle sliding under the the semi’s trailer and bursting into flames. Fire crews were able to extinguish the blaze before it spread onto the trailer.
Douglas said that no motorists were hurt, including those involved in the above crash. Deputies had to close the freeway in both directions, at the Byron Road exit to the west and the 32nd Avenue exit to the east, for over three hours in order to facilitate clean up efforts.
Nearly 24 hours earlier, one man was hospitalized and two others suffered bumps and bruises following a 15-vehicle pileup on I-196 east of Zeeland under similar weather and road conditions.
