LAKETOWN TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Dec. 16, 2024) – Ottawa County may not be the only local governmental entity without an operational leader as a new year begins.
Last Wednesday, the Laketown Township board failed to approve a contract agreement with Bob Genetski to become that community’s new Township Manager. Although a search committee had selected the current Allegan County Clerk/Register of Deeds to replace Al Meshkin, who retires after 35 years on January 3rd, the board was split on the $110,000 annual agreement, with one member not present and therefore unable to vote. Two board members who had opposed Genetski’s appointment in favor of Bronson city manager Brandon Mersman were able to block this approval, claiming they wanted more time and read the contract offer thoroughly.
Genetski, who was not at that meeting and has not issued any public statements on this situation since the vote, said beforehand that this opportunity was one he couldn’t pass up.
The one-time state lawmaker had a somewhat testing year, as he was part of a lawsuit that attempted to block the moving of his offices from the Allegan County Courthouse to the County Services Building off of Dumont Lake.
The Laketown Township Board has scheduled a special meeting for Wednesday evening at the Township Hall (4338 Beeline Rd.) to address this issue further.
