Four Hope College student-athletes have earned weekly honors from the MIAA: senior Alison DeWeerd in women’s volleyball, senior Connor Vachon in men’s cross country, junior Lina Rea in women’s soccer and junior Bella Turner in women’s swimming.
DeWeerd (Kentwood, Michigan / South Christian HS) is the MIAA Women’s Volleyball Athlete of the Week for the first time.
The middle hitter helped power Flying Dutch to 3-0 sweeps at Calvin and at home vs. Saint Mary’s College. DeWeerd averaged 2.83 kills per set with a hitting percentage of .341.
The social work major also totaled five blocks, five digs and two service aces.
Vachon (Jenison, Michigan / Jenison) is the MIAA Men’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week for the first time this season and the fifth time in his career.
The computer science and mathematics secondary education major finished 15th at the Louisville Classic on Saturday with a league-leading 8K time of 25 minutes, 16.8 seconds.
Vachon helped the Flying Dutchmen to a fourth-place finish out of 30 teams, which included runners from all three NCAA divisions and the NAIA.
Rea (Macomb, Michigan / Utica) is the MIAA Women’s Soccer Offensive Athlete of the Week for the first time.
The midfielder helped the Flying Dutch win two MIAA games last week: 11-0 at The University of Olivet on Wednesday and 5-0 at home vs. Alma College on Saturday.
The exercise science major recorded an assist at Olivet and scored twice vs. Alma during a combined 84 minutes of action.
Turner (Chelsea, Michigan / Chelsea) is the MIAA Women’s Swimming Athlete of the Week for the first time.
The psychology major finished as the top Division III finisher in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.49 seconds, trailing only to Michigan and Purdue.
Turner also anchored the second-fastest 200 medley relay in Division III so far this season with a split of 23.91. Turner led off the 400 free relay with a split of 54.23. The 400 free relay’s time of 3:35.71 is currently leading all Division III schools across the nation.
