HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Oct. 8, 2024) – Fire safety is in the spotlight this time of year.
Governor Whitmer issued a proclamation last Friday designating October as Fire Prevention Month in Michigan. It’s in conjunction with the annual Fire Prevention Week by the National Fire Prevention Association, which runs from this past Sunday through Saturday. Along the Lakeshore, such awareness was brought into the forefront with the 42nd Fire Safety Parade last Friday, in which numerous local departments participated, and there were various attractions focusing on fire prevention outside the Heeringa Holland Civic Center Place.
The theme for the Fire Prevention Week is “Smoke Alarms: Make Them Work for You.” Bret Groendyke is the Holland Fire Marshal.
According to the state Licensing and Regulatory Affairs agency, through the first eight months of 2024, Michigan has had 69 blazes that have taken the lives of 72 persons, which is down 14 percent from the same time frame of last year.
