HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Sept. 27, 2024) – Hope College is going back to its past in commemorating one of its long-standing traditions.
The Pull Tug of War between the freshmen and sophomores at the Holland-based institution of higher education is set for Saturday, beginning at 3 PM. The venue has changed to alongside the Brewer Outdoor Track on the Buys Athletic Fields complex, close to where many believe the first such test of strength and endurance took place in 1898, according to Hope Director of Communication Services Greg Olgers.
Organizers hope that the new site that can accommodate the necessary 600-foot span will be the Pull’s permanent home, after uncertain conditions at the long-time location near the Macatawa River about a mile away compelled a move five years ago to the East 11th Street-Fairbanks Avenue spot. Since 1909, sophomores hold a 72-34-3 edge on the freshmen in this event. A three-hour time limit will be in place, with the winner either claiming all of the rope in that span, or having a larger share of the rope when time expires.
The public is welcome to attend this free event.
