HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Aug. 20, 2024) – School bells ring for the first time in Academic 2025 on Tuesday morning along the Lakeshore.
Holland Christian schools get the jump on all others by beginning classes at its three elementary schools, as well as its main campus off of Ottawa Avenue. Wednesday finds the start of classroom education at Black River Public School, as well as in the Fennville and Hamilton districts, while students will report for classes at Holland and West Ottawa schools, as well as Vanderbilt Charter Academy on Thursday.
Next week, Eagle Crest Charter Academy and Zeeland Christian School begins on Monday; Saugatuck Public Schools and Calvary Schools of Holland is on Tuesday; and Zeeland Public Schools wrap up the starting run a week from Wednesday, August 28th.
There is still legislation nearly 20 years old that mandates classes in public schools across the state can’t begin until after Labor Day, but over 75 percent of the districts have received waivers that renders that law moot. It was written in an effort to support the tourism industry at the end of the summer vacation season.
State Senate Minority Whip Roger Victory of Hudsonville talked about it during a Monday appearance on WHTC’s “Talk of the Town.”
A Democratic-led effort, sponsored last year by suburban Detroit legislator Matt Koleszar, to rescind this law is still tied down in the state House.
