WYOMING, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Aug. 6, 2025) – The Allegan County Board has suffered a loss.
On Monday night, board Chairman Jim Storey announced that District 3 Commissioner and Board Vice Chairman Dean Kapenga had died at U-M Health West, where he had been taken after suffering a stroke last Friday. The one-time Sheriff’s Deputy with 30 years experience, the 69-year-old Mr. Kapenga had been a commissioner since 2007, serving as its chairman for a time, and was running unopposed in both Tuesday’s Republican Primary and the November 5 General Election for a ninth term. He was also involved with the Allegan Community Corrections Agency, as well as the county’s Community Action Agency and Commission on Aging.
According to Storey, Mr. Kapenga was about to embark on a mission trip to Guatemala when he was stricken. He leaves behind a wife, four children and 16 grandchildren.
On Tuesday, the Dykstra Funeral Home posted a Friday visitation (4:30 PM-7:30 PM) and a Saturday 10 AM funeral at Central Wesleyan Church (446 W. 40th St., Holland). Scheduled board study sessions and business meetings slated for this coming Thursday had already been canceled due to a lack of a quorum before Mr. Kapenga’s illness and death.
