LANSING, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, July 30, 2024) – Lakeshore-based fire departments will share in $154,000 of $14.9 million in state Firefighter Turnout Gear program grants.
In an announcement on Monday, the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity said that 187 fire and safety agencies will get these funds to purchase an additional set of gear for full-time career firefighters. It consists of coat, pants and boots that are the latest in personal protective gear on the market, giving crews a clean set of gear to switch into promptly after a run, instead of waiting until shift’s end to properly clean the used gear off.
The Holland Department of Public Safety received the largest grant in this program at $77,000. That’s followed by Grand Haven Township at $24,500; Saugatuck and Spring Lake at $21,000; Otsego at $7,000; and Georgetown Township at $3,500.
These enhancement grants were allocated as part of the current FY 2024 state budget.
