LANSING, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, July 25, 2024) – Unemployment went up along the Lakeshore and across the state in June.
That’s according to monthly non-seasonally adjusted numbers disclosed on Thursday from the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget. For June of 2024, the jobless rate in Ottawa County stood at 3.8 percent, up seven tenths of a percentage point from May, and three tenths more than a year ago. In Allegan County, the level stood at 3.9 percent for last month, up seven tenths and two tenths, respectively, from those same time frames.
The local figures are in line with what was seen throughout Michigan, where all 17 major labor markets and all but two of the 83 counties in the state had higher unemployment levels in June as compared to May. Officials of the Michigan Center for Data and Analytics say that this trend was typical for the month, based on past history.
As for where the Lakeshore counties stand in June with others in the state: Ottawa is third behind Grand Traverse at 3.6 and Mackinac at 3.7, while Allegan is tied for fourth with Livingston. Among the major markets, the Grand Rapids-Wyoming MSA, which includes Ottawa County, had a 4.0 unemployment rate in June, up eight tenths of a percentage point from May. Allegan County is in no major market.
