ALLEGAN, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, July 21, 2024) – The legal battle over where the offices of Allegan County’s clerk, treasurer and drain commissioner should be continues, although one of the plaintiffs has been compelled to step aside.
Sixteen months ago, County Clerk/Register of Deeds Bob Genetski, County Treasurer Sally Brooks, and County Drain Commissioner Denise Medemar filed a lawsuit against the county board, claiming that an attempt to move their offices out of the courthouse complex off of Chestnut Street in the county seat of Allegan into the county’s administrative building off of 122nd Avenue in Allegan Township was in violation of the state constitution. The matter is still pending in the courts, but Genetski said last Friday that he has had to remove himself as a plaintiff for financial reasons.
The nearly $1.1 million renovation is nearing completion, according to county Board Chairman Jim Storey of Holland.
A mediation session this past February aimed at resolving the legal dispute was apparently unsuccessful, and the matter remains in the courts.
