PRESS RELEASE (WHTC-AM/FM) – The Hope College wind ensemble will present its annual Halloween concert on at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31, 2020, as a live-streamed event at hope.edu/live.
No in-person audience will be present, in light of COVID-19 guidelines.
The performers will all be in costume, performing variations on an “Advent Hymn,” by Fisher Tull; “Rondo Caprice,” by Joshua Missal; “Toccata,” by Carlos Chavez; “Living Room Music,” by John Cage; “Hope College,” by Sy Brandon; Overture to “Cosi fan Tutte,” by W.A. Mozart; “Suite in Bb,” by Richard Strauss; Suite from “The Threepenny Opera,” by Kurt Weill; and “First Suite in Eb,” by Gustav Holst. Faculty member Christopher Fashun is set to conduct the “Toccata” by Chavez, and Jordan VanHemert will play saxophone.
The Wind Ensemble is directed by Gabe Southard, an associate professor at Hope, where he also conducts the concert band, and the faculty and student collaborative ensemble. He completed his doctorate of musical arts in conducting at Michigan State University, and performed with the Madison Symphony Orchestra and the Lucca, Italy, Opera Orchestra, as well as a number of community orchestras.
