Ellen grew up in Flint, MI and graduated from Kearsley High School in 1959. She went on to earn her Associate’s degree from Delta College. Ellen loved to read and owned thousands of books over her lifetime. She also enjoyed crocheting, and created many beautiful lap blankets and kitchen items.
Ellen loved living on the northside of Holland and could often be found going to Holland State Park to watch boats in the channel pass by Big Red.
She was preceded in death by her parents Irving “Em” and Elizabeth “Arlene,” Hendricks; her husband Richard Schaut Sr., and brother-in-law David Childs; as well as many in-laws from the Schaut family.
Ellen is survived by children Dan (Kimberly) Hower and daughters Kylie, Kennedy, and Emma; son Richard Schaut Jr. and daughter Signe Johnson; son Robert “Bob” (Jill) Schaut and daughters Brooke (Cameron) Brigham and Lacey (Cane) Burling; and daughter Lara Hernandez and daughter Anika Hernandez. She is also survived by sisters Linda (Jim) Payne and Diane Childs; as well as several in-laws from the Schaut family.
A private family memorial is being planned for a later date.
