BATTLE CREEK, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – No criminal charges will be filed after a hunter killed a gray wolf in Calhoun County during a legal coyote hunt with a guide last January.
The hunter had thought it was a large coyote but genetic testing confirmed it was a wolf.
It was the first time a gray wolf had been seen in the area since the early 1900s.
Calhoun County Prosecutor David Gilbert told the Associated Press, “The conduct here appears to be based on a reasonable and honest belief they were legally shooting a coyote.”
The DNR said at the time that gray wolves are now confined almost exclusively to the Upper Peninsula. Wildlife officials have no idea how it got to southern Michigan.
