UNDATED (WHTC-AM/FM, June 7, 2024) – Special activities are on tap at two venues along the Lakeshore this weekend.
On Saturday, the annual Bridgefest is set for Allegan. For nearly four decades, residents in and around the county seat gather near the Old Iron Bridge downtown to usher in the summer season. There are all-day activities for the young and the young at heart, with music and entertainment, food and beverages, and organizers say that even the ongoing roundabout construction of the junction of M-40 and M-89 won’t put a damper on the fun.
An added attraction this year is the opening of the 1960 original cornerstone of the Allegan County Courthouse, as part of the dedication of the Old Allegan County Jail & Historical Society. A metal box meant to be a time capsule will be revealed, with memorabilia of the time when the home of the 48th District Court was built inside.
While classic car aficionados descended on downtown Holland for the annual Remember When Car Show and Cruise on Friday, many of them may be back on Sunday afternoon for the start of “The Bandit Run.” Honoring Lansing native Burt Reynolds, who starred in the 1977 movie “Smokey and the Bandit,” a refurbished black and gold Pontiac Trans Am will use the backdrop of a show and shine, at the site of the former Lincoln-Mercury dealership on East 8th Avenue between Columbia and College Avenues, to begin a five-day tour of Michigan.
