LAKETOWN TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, June 4, 2024) – The Huyser House will be no more.
On Monday, a contractor retained by the Laketown Township Parks and Recreation Commission began what is seen as a two-day project to level the 84-year-old structure off of 142nd Avenue and 64th Street. Most of the building was demolished within an hour, with final clean up efforts set for Tuesday.
The home, built in 1939 by Manuel and Lilah Huyser, along with 102 acres of land surrounding it, was acquired by the township in 2001, and the house has sat idle since. Efforts to find a practical and affordable use for the dwelling over the years have met with continual disapproval by the parks and rec commission, and the township board in March gave the go ahead to tear the house down.
While no firm plans for the property are in place, the commission looks to upgrade the Huyser Farm Park with improved trails, gardens and blueberry fields.
