SAUGATUCK, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Apr. 30, 2024) – The Playground Community Build is back on in Saugatuck.
City officials reopened registration for volunteers to pitch in on the reconstruction of the Village Square Playground, after a lawsuit filed by the Maplewood Hotel, whose property adjoins the park off of Butler and Main streets, halted a planned three-day effort earlier this month. The litigation, which centered on maintaining the historical ambiance of the area as well as perceived infringing on the bed-and-breakfast entity, was settled out of court by the plaintiffs and the city.
The $337,000 project will replace the current playground equipment with new trappings that would make the area have the look of the lost city of Singapore, which had been near the mouth of the Kalamazoo River before shifting dunes buried it in the late 19th century.
Organizers of the Community Build have now set up a three-day work period for May 6th through the 8th, with the supervisory help of the Saugatuck Department of Public Works and retained contractor Sinclair Engineers. Those who had signed up for the initial build must go back and re-register, with an online link for that and other details here.
