OLIVE TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Feb. 28, 2024) – Thursday is the first day in a new role for Eric DeBoer, and the first day of retirement for Valerie Weiss.
Weiss’ final day as Ottawa County Undersheriff was on Wednesday, ending a nearly three decade-long career in the department, as she rose from a patrol deputy to the number two position when Steve Kempker was elevated to Sheriff in 2017. Weiss gave six weeks notice before her departure.
Kempker, who was the undersheriff before being elected to replace retiring sheriff Gary Rosema, is himself not seeking reelection to a third four-year term, and promoted DeBoer from sergeant to replace Weiss.
Kempker is on record already in supporting DeBoer’s candidacy for sheriff, but in the past month since Kempker’s retirement announcement, Grand Rapids Police Captain Michael Maycroft, who calls Allendale home, and Jon Anderson, a retired Sheriff’s Captain from Riverside County, California who moved to Grand Haven and is the co-owner of Bullet Hole Firearms and Training in Holland, have also announced their intentions to seek the Republican nomination in the August 6th primary election. The filing deadline is April 23rd.
